Pearl Necklace Lengths & Sizing, Explained

The hardest part of buying a pearl necklace online isn't the pearl — it's guessing where it'll actually sit. A few centimetres decides whether a strand hugs your throat or drops onto your chest. So before you add to cart, here's how necklace lengths work, and how to land the right one the first time.

For most people, a 40–45cm necklace is the safe, versatile choice — it sits right around the collarbone and works with almost any neckline. Want it higher and snug? Go shorter, toward a choker. Want a longer drop? Size up. The rest is just knowing where each length lands.

How do I measure my neck for a necklace?

Wrap a soft measuring tape (or a piece of string you then measure) around the base of your neck where a necklace would sit. That number is your base measurement. Then add for where you want the necklace to fall:

  • Add 0–2cm for a snug choker that sits on the neck.
  • Add 3–5cm for a comfortable collarbone length.
  • Add 8cm or more for a longer, lower drop.

Two minutes with a string saves you the "it's shorter than I expected" moment. If you're between sizes, size up — a necklace can sit higher by choice, but it can't get longer.

Pearl necklace lengths, explained

Necklace lengths have standard names. Here's each one, in centimetres and inches, and where it lands:

Most everyday pearl necklaces — and most of Pryte's — live in the choker-to-princess range, because that's where a pearl strand reads as both classic and modern.

What length should you choose?

Match the length to the neckline and the mood:

  1. Everyday, goes-with-everything: princess (43–48cm). If you buy one length, buy this.
  2. Higher necklines, crew tees, or a sharper look: choker (35–40cm) sits above the collar and frames the throat.
  3. Open collars, V-necks, layering: a longer matinee drop fills the space, or layer a choker over a princess.
  4. Layering two strands: keep them ~5cm apart in length so they stack cleanly instead of tangling.

For men, a princess-length strand (around 45–50cm) sits well over a tee or an open collar without feeling tight — more on that in Pearls for Men: How to Actually Wear Them.

How Pryte necklaces are sized

Most Pryte necklaces are adjustable, with an extender chain so one piece covers a small range of lengths — you tune it to sit where you want. Each product page lists the exact length or range for that piece, so check it before you buy.

One thing to watch: chokers and short strands have the least give. If a piece is a fixed choker length, measure your neck first (see above) — a choker that's a couple of centimetres too small won't sit comfortably. When in doubt, message us before ordering and we'll tell you how a specific piece runs.

FAQ

What length pearl necklace should I get?
For most people, a 43–48cm (princess) length is the most versatile — it sits on or just below the collarbone and suits almost any neckline. Go shorter (35–40cm) for a snug choker, or longer (50cm+) for a lower drop. Measure your neck first and add a few centimetres for comfort.

How do I measure my neck for a necklace?
Wrap a soft tape or a piece of string around the base of your neck where a necklace would sit, then measure it. Add 0–2cm for a choker, 3–5cm for collarbone length, or 8cm+ for a longer drop. If you're between sizes, choose the longer one.

What is a choker length?
A choker is a short necklace of about 35–40cm (14–16 inches) that sits snugly around the base of the neck, above the collarbone. It suits higher necklines and gives a sharper, more modern look than a longer strand.

Are Pryte pearl necklaces adjustable?
Most are. Many Pryte necklaces include an extender chain so they cover a small range of lengths, and each product page lists the exact measurement. Fixed chokers have the least give, so measure your neck before ordering one.

What length is best for layering pearl necklaces?
Keep each strand about 5cm apart in length so they stack cleanly without tangling — for example a 40cm choker over a 45cm princess. Different lengths create the layered look; matching lengths tend to sit on top of each other.
